NEWS RELEASE NO. 98-009
RICHMOND, BC-The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has recently released their Standard Guide for Selection of Hardline Communication Systems for Confined-Space Rescue (Designation: F 1764 - 97). This standard covers the recommended criteria for selecting hardwired communication systems for use in permit-required confined space rescue operations.
ASTM determined that because of the many unique requirements of permit-required confined space rescue operations and the specific construction and composition of some confined spaces, hardline communication systems may be the only type that will meet the requirements for working within these spaces. Some of these requirements are set forth in Federal Regulation and some have been developed as safe operating procedures by industry.
"We are very pleased to see this new standard guide," said Mr. Terence A. Ibbetson, President of CON-SPACE COMMUNICATIONS LTD., (VSE: CCB) a company that specializes in manufacturing such hardline equipment. "It is precisely what we have been saying for sometime now and to have an organization as well respected as ASTM specify this kind of equipment is not only excellent but a feather in the CON-SPACE cap."
Numerous system requirements were specified in the standard covering items such as: Intrinsic Safety ratings, continuous hands-free voice communication, dedicated system, battery powered, and the ability to work in conjunction with any personal protective equipment necessary to be worn in the confined space. "All CON-SPACE systems meet or exceed every one of the requirements developed by the society and we are proud of that," concluded Ibbetson.
The ASTM society, 100 years old this year, is a non-profit, non-government American organization that establishes and recommends industrial standards for industry, fire departments and rescue teams. Their Standard Guides are well respected and often used worldwide.
CON-SPACE world headquarters is located in Richmond, British
Columbia, with facilities in the United States and England. It
also has numerous distributors throughout the world. The company
is considered the world leading authority on specialized voice
communication equipment used by workers and rescuers that operate
in confined spaces and hazardous atmospheres.
