NEWS RELEASE NO. 99-010
Trading Symbol VSE: CCB
US SEC Exemption No. 82-3378
RICHMOND, BC - Mr. Terence A.
Ibbetson, President of CON-SPACE Communications Ltd., (VSE:CCB)
announced today the receipt of an initial order, worth over $175,000,
from the U.S. Navy.
"This is the first order utilizing the Confined Space/Gas
Free Communications Kit we configured specifically for the U.S.
Navy," said Ibbetson.
Last January marked the end of a 5-year test and evaluation period
by the U.S. Navy of the CON-SPACE equipment resulting in a Justification
and Approval Report being issued by the Office of the Assistant
Secretary of the Navy, (Installations and Environment). This report
actually approves the CON-SPACE communication kit for use by both
the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
A number of these initial systems are destined for U.S. Naval
Training Facilities throughout the world. The equipment will be
used to train Navy and Marine Corps personnel responsible for
Gas Free (Confined Space) Entry work. It is anticipated that the
communication requirement satisfied by the CON-SPACE equipment
will be written into the Navy's Safety Training curriculum.
Although the approval process appeared to take a long time, it
was actually fast-tracked, pointed out Ibbetson. "Items used
by the military must meet very demanding standards and prove themselves
under all conditions before they can be accepted."
The safety of personnel working in hazardous locations onboard
ships and at shore facilities is a top Navy priority. Naval Safety
Regulations now state that there must be communication between
the Safety Attendant and any confined space entrant(s) during
work or rescue operations. Two-way radios are not appropriate
in these situations due, in part, to a ship's steel construction
which blocks the radio signals. CON-SPACE's unique equipment is
designed to operate in such heavily shielded areas.
CON-SPACE is the industry leader in the manufacture of specialized
voice communication equipment for confined spaces, hazardous environments
and explosive atmospheres. Its equipment is widely used by industry,
airlines, municipalities, governments, fire departments, rescue
teams and militaries around the world. All branches of the U.S.
Military currently use CON-SPACE equipment.
